How do you heat a swimming pool?

In an outdoor pool, the main source of energy for the pool is the pool cover. It is available as a so-called solar cover, i.e. the cover slats are transparent and transfer the solar energy into the water while the pool is closed. The water is warmed up for free! At the same time, the cover ensures that the captured energy remains in the water. On the assumption of the average solar radiation in Central Germany, a pool measuring 4 x 8 metres can be supplied with approximately 5,000 kWh of energy this way. Secondarily, air-source heat pumps that draw energy from the air around them and transfer it into the pool are needed. A heat pump is driven by electricity and can produce up to 5 kWh of heat per kWh of electricity consumed – therefore, its heat gain is significantly higher than its electricity consumption. This makes heat pumps particularly energy-efficient. The pool can also be connected to the home radiator. In this case, the pool would be heated with gas or oil, which can cause even lower energy costs than the heat pump. However, access to the heating system is generally only possible in new buildings. The recommended heating system depends on the number of months of the year the pool is to be used. Thus the question is: which equipment is the right one for which bathing season?
